Traditional Knowledge

YKDFN’s Traditional Knowledge Program records, studies and preserves the land-based traditional knowledge of past generations of Yellowknives Dene so that future generations can learn from their ancestors.

The Traditional Knowledge Program:

  • Conducts Traditional Knowledge projects as part of Environmental Assessments;
  • Conducts research relevant to the history of the Yellowknives Dene;
  • Works with consulting companies and government to ensure that Traditional Knowledge forms part of Archaeological Assessments;
  • Develop information storage and dissemination systems to ensure future accessibility to YKDFN Traditional Knowledge. YKDFN’s Community Knowledge Keeper

Past knowledge of the land – and the impacts past generations had – is an important part of how future generations use the land and is integral to respecting the land, the water and the air.
